What is Included: 6 - 12 credits, Intensive Spanish Language & Culture level 1 & 2, 3 & 4.

Accommodations in homestay (1-2 students per family).

3 meals per day and laundry services once per week.

On-site orientation: Guided 2 hour walking tour of the city during the afternoon through the most emblematic areas of the historical city; Teatro Falla, Plaza San Antonio, Plaza de las Flores, Mercado, Catedral, Plaza San Juan de Dios, Paseo de Canalejas, Plaza de España,..etc. Free of charges.

Welcome reception at local restaurant. Introduction to traditional foods & drink to learn the local cultural eating/drinking norms

Farewell meal. Celebratory gathering in Cadiz with a group farewell meal

2 day trips. Please note, the two trips will be selected within 2 weeks prior to the start of program:
o Jerez de la Frontera (Equestrian show) day trip by private bus – Visit to Jerez Horse show by the Foundation Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art
o El Puerto de Santa Maria. Travel by catamaran passenger boat to visit a local winery, the medieval castle “Castillo San Marcos”, for wine tasting (Sherry wines)
o Seville. Visit by private bus the mudejar fortress “Reales Alcazares”, the Cathedral and Barrio de Santa Cruz, the former Jewish quarter
o Vejer de la Frontera, Baelo Claudia (Bolonia) and Tarifa. Travel by private bus to Vejer de la Frontera, a typical and picturesque white village in the province of Cadiz, the archeological site of the Roman village Baelo Claudia and free time in Tarifa, on the southernmost coast of Spain, located only 24km from Morocco

1 in-class music/dance culture seminar. Note one per session will be offered:
o Sevillanas Seminar
o Flamenco Seminar
What is not Included: Round trip airfare is purchased on your own. Please talk with the Office of Study Abroad for futher info.

Recommended travel money to bring: $500-800 for personal spending money
Estimated Costs: Program Fee of $2200-2600 (finalized after 2/28/14), per session, is payable to the university by check or money order and handed-in to the Office of Study Abroad & Int'l. Experiences. Students using aid or other means to make payment should speak with the Office right away to plan ahead.

Program Description

Travel & Study in Cadiz, Spain wih UML!

Earn 6 - 12 credits in Intensive Spanish Language & Culture level 1 through 4 in Cadiz, Spain with UMass Lowell.

Session I: June 28-July 18, 2014, Spanish 1 & 2
Session II: July 19-August 8, 2014, Spanish 3 & 4

Students will reside and study in Cadiz for 3 weeks - 6 weeks, depending upon session selection.

Through living with a local family (homestay), attending class, and taking advantage of the University of Cadiz resources such as tutoring, students can expect to increase their language skills substantially.

To enhance the experience, students will have the opportunity to visit Jerez de la Frontera where they will enjoy a local winery as well as visit the Jerez Horse show by the Foundation Royal Andalusian Schoool of Equestrian Art. Students will also attend a Flamenco Seminar, receive an on-site 2 hour walking tour of the city and welcome reception at local restaurant for an introduction to traditional foods & drinks to learn the loal cultural eating and drinking norms.

Students will also have the opportunity to participate in optional excursions such as a one night Flamenco show at the tavern La Cava as well as a day trip to Sevilla.
