Welcome to Portugal! Study in Portugal Summer Program

Lisbon, Portugal's capital city, is one of Europe's most picturesque and vibrant cities. In 2010 it was elected for the second time as Europe’s Leading City Break Destination in the World Travel Awards (WTA) – the world’s most prestigious tourism awards-- beating out such cities as Madrid, London, Prague, and Istanbul.

Visitors who have not seen the city in the last 10-15 years will find Lisbon to be one of Europe's most cosmopolitan capitals. Home to nearly 2 million people, many of whom hail from other countries in the Lusophone world, the greater Lisbon metropolitan area offers a vital comparative perspective for understanding contemporary Southern Europe and the political economy of European Union membership. Students will explore this theme of European integration both inside and outside of the classrooms at ISEG, our institutional partner. Besides our visits to famous historic sites of interest in the city center, numerous guided visits will also introduce students to "The New Lisbon" and its relationship to regions outside the capital, as well the EU. In Lisbon these visits include such places as: the National Parliament, the Belem Presidential Palace, and Nations Park, the site of the 1998 World's Fair and one of Europe's foremost urban renewal projects. Outside of Lisbon we will enjoy an overnight trip to the Unesco World Heritage city of Evora, including a tour of the vast wine and cork-producing estates of the Alentejo region; Setubal and its Serra da Arrabida coastal region; and finally a day-trip and guest lecture at the University of Coimbra, one of the world's oldest universities. Free weekends allow students the freedom to explore other regions of interest as well, for example short trips to Porto or the Algarve.
